Many people categorized Tupac Shakur as a criminal or gangster, but he was an extremely talented artists, whose songs still have an impact of many people today. Tupac’s song “Keep Ya Head Up” was one of his most powerful songs, and his lyrics convey a powerful message about race, woman, money, and most importantly staying positive. Tupac raps to his audience about how we disrespect woman when we need to praise them. He talks about the fact that many children grow up with single mothers and that we have to stop that trait from continuing. He basically says that there is a stereotype that many black men leave their children with a single mother. This can be tied to Bell Hooks, “Preface about black men”, because one of the main reasons that men are portrayed in a negative light among women is because they have been known for doing this in the past. Tupac says that he feels bad for all the woman all welfare, because they shouldn’t raise a child alone. He talks about the fact that many people don’t know what he goes through on a daily basis and people are driving around in a “benz” oblivious to his issues. In a rap culture that can be very violent at times, this song is a breathe of fresh air, as he simply tells people to always stay strong when certain obstacles get in your way. Although Tupac was shot and killed, his self-determination to change peoples lives with his music and leave a legacy before him was successful.
